I work in photography post production, need to make PDFs from images but with the file names shown on the PDF and 4 up instead of a single image on each page.
Can anyone suggest additional plugins or scripting language I can implement into the automator?
PosteRazor is free, open source, and appears to do what you need. It takes a large image and splits it into a multi-page PDF.
As Nathan comments, the interface is pretty rough around the edges. Tiler and SplitPrint are paid alternatives if you prefer a little more flexibility and an interface that's easier on the eyes.
This works for me on Mountain Lion:
Open all the JPG's in Preview so that the files are selectable within the one window, i.e. thumbnails of the JPG's are viewable in the selection pane located the window's left side.
Click in the selection pane and select all the thumbnails with Cmd-A.
Select File > Print... from the menu bar.
Select PDF > (from the drop down) Save as PDF... from within the Print Dialog.
Take it from there...

Automator lacks sophisticated tools to impose 4 images on a page. Surely you have Photoshop? You should be able to create an Action to do this: even creating 2 x 2 Thumbnails would work.
