macOS Messages – Contact Accounts Showing as Invalid

I had Messages.app when I got my mac a year and a half ago and it worked great.

However, since a few weeks ago all my contacts in my previous conversations appear in red (as if they do not have an account).

What's even more curious is that I can see when people are actually typing (I see the 3 dots (dis)appearing), but I only get the message on my iDevices.

Solutions I have already tried :

Restarting messages
Signing out/in my account
Rebooting

I am now out of solutions, do you guy have any ideas what the problem might be?

NB : My OSX is up-to-date with 10.9.3

Edit : It also doesn't work on my iPad (iPhone is still OK, receiving iMessages as iMessages).
Edit2: I hoped updating to Yosemite would help. But no 🙁

It's only a guess, but your scenario matches an issue I had with my iDevices and Message on the Mac too. See also the discussion here.

What resolved the issue was activating the iMessage Setting on my iPhone via Settings > Messages.

Strangely this does effect the Messages send/receive on the Mac as well!

Can you verify this?

I found a sort of solution to this bug. What I did is write an AppleScript which tells Messages to connect all accounts when one of the accounts successfully connects. I use Messages with Gmail, Yahoo and Bonjour, so when either of those connects, it "tells" all other accounts to connect. It's not failure-proof, but it seems to keep my accounts online properly so far.

Usage instructions:

Edit the AppleScript above to include the services you are using
Save it using "AppleScript Editor.app" to a .scpt file
Open Messages > Preferences > Alerts
Set the script to run for the "When I Log In" event.

N.B.

For the line containing log in service "<service>" you will need to replace <service> with the value you find in the Description field for that particular service in Messages’ account preferences. In my case my Yahoo! account had ”Yahoo” in its description field so I had to change log in service "Yahoo!" to log in service "Yahoo". Ditto for the other services.

As of 10.8.2 the only way to do that is to keep that particular conversation open all the time.

Another workaround is to copy the preferred google talk info to another contact name with just that. "Jane googletalk" so you know which is which.

On a conceptual level i don't think they will fix it. It's the same with multiple phone numbers... you have to select which one each time you call... you can't have a preferred number, UNLESS you Favorite that number.

Alas there there is no favorite option in messages for mac.
