Is there a way to open two views of the same PDF in Preview (without creating two copies of the file), or perhaps split the window and show two different pages at the same time?
This is very useful when reading a paper which refers back to equations on previous pages.
Adobe Reader can do this, too: It includes a Poster Print option in its custom print dialog.
It’s the first time I missed a feature from Preview (or the native OS X print dialog) that Adobe Reader has.
Adobe Reader is free (as in beer) software, it used to be called Acrobat Reader. (Do not confuse it with full-blown Acrobat or any other expensive Adobe product, which can probably do that, too.)
This works for me on Mountain Lion:
Open all the JPG's in Preview so that the files are selectable within the one window, i.e. thumbnails of the JPG's are viewable in the selection pane located the window's left side.
Click in the selection pane and select all the thumbnails with Cmd-A.
Select File > Print... from the menu bar.
Select PDF > (from the drop down) Save as PDF... from within the Print Dialog.
Take it from there...

From the Print dialogue choose the PDF button, Open PDF in Preview.
The temporary copy seems just to vanish when closed, as you would want; and it has the same name and location as the original. If you markup the new copy, it creates a duplicate with new name and you choose to save or not.
