MacOS – Open a program in finder with only keyboard

If I navigate to a program in my Applications folder in Finder and press enter the program offers to be renamed. Only a double-click with the mouse opens the app.

How can I open it with only the keyboard?

You can use cmd+O or cmd+↓ to open apps from the keyboard.

Other way is to use Spotlight cmd+space and type the app name, then hit enter.

From this Apple Support article it's clear that the Finder Preferences are overridden by the preference in System Preferences > Dock > Prefer tabs when opening documents.

This seems oddly clunky to me. Apple's GUIs are usually thought out very carefully, but they seem to have made a mess of this. (Well, unless I'm missing something.)

Try rebuilding the Launch Services database, which populates the Open With menu. It can sometimes get corrupted, which can cause duplicate entries, slowdowns and other weirdness.

If you're comfortable with the Terminal, you can do this with a single command:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Otherwise, a free GUI tool like Onyx can do it at the push of a button.
