MacOS – Numbers 3 – How to apply custom chart style

Using Numbers 3.0 with Mavericks.

I am creating a bunch of scatter plots in numbers. I want to remove the big bubbly data point symbols and simply display the data as connected points.

Setting this up is no problem for one chart. I'd like to apply this style to every chart I make for the remainder of my project.

When I select the chart, I see a bunch of different chart icons in the 'chart styles' section of the formatting bar. I can apparently add the style of my current chart to this group for future use by clicking on a blank square with a plus button next to it. When I click the plus button, a new icon shows up in that little box.

I assume that, if I create another chart, I should be able to just click on that last custom chart style I had 'saved' and the series formatting would automatically change. But alas, it doesn't.

Is there something I'm missing? Does the "chart style" only allow changing the colors of the different series on a graph, as opposed to accounting for changed data point styling?

It appears that the Data Symbols series preference is not a part of the styles. Why can't you select all of the charts when you are finished with them (by Command clicking or Command + Shift dragging) and then changing the data point styling of all of them at one time?

I assume that you mean 5000 observations. R will work, and RStudio will get you to use R with a bit more GUI than the native application. Commercial solutions like Stata -- which has a soft learning curve, in comparison especially to R -- will also work that kind of sample without any difficulty (by statistical standards, 5000 observations is a relatively small dataset).

The learning curve will matter if you want to reach beyond a mere plot; otherwise, a quick look at the documentation for line graphs should suffice (for R, check there and there, for instance). HTH!

Style text in Numbers formula

Although one cannot style individual characters in a formula, one feature of Apple Numbers is the canvas. One can take advantage of this by adding tables and text objects anywhere.

The above screen shot uses a static (as the OP's "Invoice terms" text is hard coded in their formula example, it is assumed static) text field placed next to the table (a single cell table with no border, in this case) containing the cell with the formula.

The OP's use of the CONCATENATE function is unneeded as the ampersands do the same job. To use CONCATENATE in this case:

=CONCATENATE(Terms,", please pay by...")

Where Terms is the reference to the cell containing the Terms text.

By using a number for the days, this can be used in a calculation against the Invoice date to determine the date payment is due. But that is a topic for another question. ;)
