MacOS – Mavericks Captive Portal Request

alright I may have some light to shed on this:

I just got off the phone with an Apple Engineer and he said a few things to me that make sense. He has stated that the "crippled browser" should never be displaying any other page than our captive portal page. He stated that if after logging into captive portal I am redirected to www.apple.com/library/test/success.html the iPad's "crippled browser" will close. If I see another page (like I saw apple.com and not http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html which would have closed the browser.) it is likely that the system hosting captive portal is not directing me to the exact original page requested. Which was http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html It could in fact be truncating or altering the original URL, which is possibly why I see apple.com's main page in the "crippled browser"

No resolution yet, as I still need to confrim that the wireless controller is indeed doing this, but it makes sense, and might help.

As documented in the Apple knowledge base:

If you cancel before logging in to the network

Tapping Cancel on the Log In screen disassociates the device from the captive Wi-Fi network.

If you joined the network from the Wi-Fi screen using the ⓘ button, or you joined less than eight minutes ago, you'll see a message telling you the network isn't connected to the Internet. You can choose one of these options:

• Use Without Internet: this option will dismiss the Welcome screen, turn off Auto-Login for the network, keep your device associated with the network, and allow you to interact with the network in other ways.

• Use Other Network: this option will dismiss the Welcome screen, disassociate your device from the network, and return you to the Wi-Fi Settings screen. From there, you can choose a different network.

• Cancel: this option will return you to the Welcome screen.

Therefore you can (now—I don't know in which version of iOS this was introduced) click cancel and then "Use Without Internet".
