I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I recently upgraded both of them from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and now neither of them can “see” each other, despite both having File Sharing and Remote Login enabled in the “Sharing” section of System Preferences.
I used to be able to SSH into the other Mac, and the other Mac would show up as a device in Finder, but no more. Is this related to the SMB issue I’ve seen around the Internet?
What can I do so I can browse between my Macs via Finder and SSH again?
While I applaud the effort to learn how to collect these scripts, I would say you might just buy a copy of Apple's Remote Desktop tool.
It has pre-built data collection tools that will collect thousands of data points about each system, periodically get updates and you can run reports against the local database of last known configurations or tick a checkbox to refresh all status and then run the report.
Here is how the interface for what you ask looks:
That tool leverages ssh log in, remote apple events and Apple's own remote management hooks to be extremely flexible and running arbitrary shell scripts, custom packages, remote Apple Scripts as well as performing more direct data collection that is embedded into the OS.
The reports and data collected are all easily printed, copied or exported in tab/comma separated files for ease of re-use.
I'm reasonably sure that I updated my iMac from 10.8 to 10.9 without having to re-enable any of those features. I wasn't using the ARD client (or server), just the built-in "Screen Sharing" VNC service, and the upgrade itself was done in-person.
If I were you I'd just make sure SSH is definitely enabled, so if you -do- have to re-enable VNC after updating, you can do so from the command line. Chances are, though, you'll be able to re-connect VNC/ARD immediately after reboot.
Also, OS X updates nowadays tend to reboot right back into a user session so the installation can finish -- I don't believe you'll get trapped outside of a user session.

From your question it sounds like you can ssh into the machine but not connect via Finder. This leads me to think this is a File Sharing setting, not a Remote Login setting as the two are independent. So my answer applies to File Sharing settings.
If you go to System Preferences, then Sharing and for the File Sharing service, choose Options...
By default Mavericks has Share files and folders using SMB and Share files and folders using AFP selected but no users selected under Windows File Sharing.
It also appears (in my testing) that with these selections, when you try to connect to another computer listed in the Finder sidebar, it attempts to connect using SMB and does not fall back to trying AFP if the SMB connection fails.
The answer I found was to either
a. Specify a user to connect with using SMB in the options... section of File Sharing in System Preferences
b. Specify sharing over AFP only, deselecting SMB sharing
c. In Finder menu select Go then Connect to server... and then in the Server Address: field enter something like
afp://sharedcomputername.localwhere
sharedcomputernameis the name of the computer you're trying to connect to.
