MacOS – Java Plugin for Chrome on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2

I'm trying to use webex in Chrome. To click on webex links, I need the java plugin. However, it appears that a recent OS X Mountain Lion update removed the java plugin from my computer.

When I try to install the java plugin in chrome, I see the following error:

Chrome does not support Java 7. Java 7 runs only on 64-bit browsers and Chrome is a 32-bit browser.

If you download Java 7, you will not be able to run Java content in Chrome and will need to use a 64-bit browser (such as Safari or Firefox) to run Java content within a browser. Additionally, installing Java 7 will disable the ability to use Apple Java 6 on your system.

Fine, so I try to download the Java 6 plugin instead, but it appears that Oracle has no Java 6 plugin.

What gives? How do I install the java plugin for Chrome?

You are in luck, Apple released a "fix" for this issue:

Basically Apple has provided some terminal commands that move the plug-in from the disabled folder to where it needs to be to work in Chrome.

However you would be better off (read: SAFER!) by using the updated Java plugin from Oracle and a browser that can use that plugin, like Firefox or Safari.

It prompts you (just tried to open Aptana). I let it install and

java -version

gives

java version "1.6.0_33"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_33-b03-424-11M3720)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.8-b03-424, mixed mode)

MacOS – How to get Java applets working with Chrome

Currently, on a 64-bit Mac (such as >=10.8) with Java 7 you cannot use Java Applets in Chrome.

Java 7 is 64 bit only, and as such requires a 64 bit browser. Chrome on Mac is currently only 32 bit.

The Chrome/Chromium developers have a bug to show progress, although actual work seems to have stalled for some reason.: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=115774

If you wish to use an older version that will work (not recommended due to security issues) you can follow these steps, assuming you still have java 6 installed: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559 (summarised below)

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
sudo mv /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Commands/javaws /usr/bin/javaws

To undo these steps

sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/javaws /usr/bin/javaws

Followed by downloading the latest Java from Oracle.
