MacOS – Is it possible to use Adobe CS5 with Java SE 7

I have Adobe CS5 installed (old version because it's what my institutional site license covers) on Mavericks.

Whenever I boot my system, I get the following dialog box:

CS5 Java SE 6 installation prompt

However, I don't have Java SE 6 installed, only Java SE 7 (and JDK 7). I don't particularly want Java SE 6 on my system since it is now quite ancient and probably full of security holes by this point. If I try to launch any of the CS5 apps, I get the same prompt.

Is it possible to run CS5 without Java 6 SE on Mavericks?

I don't know if this works for CS5 and Mavericks, but for CS6 I have found a solution for Yosemite (more details there):

Create a directory /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk.
Create a symlink /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents from your Java 7 / 8.
If missing, create an empty directory /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle.

Paths on Mavericks may differ a bit though.

Also, you'll probably need to be root to do this, so use sudo using an administrative account.

I'd start with the actual uninstaller rather than the cleaner.

Adobe does do deep integration, and I've been known to just walk away from machines with too much adobe on them. If you feel the uninstaller isn't getting things clean enough, you can take it a step further as follows:

Perform a clean install of the OS
use Migration Assistant to bring in the user account rather than setting up a new user on the "clean" Mac
download the uninstaller onto the new admin account

At that point, you can run the uninstaller to clean out any ~/Library plugins that might be installed. It's overkill, but sometimes a clean start is better than trying to let uninstallers find every copy of files that have been zipped, moved, linked, etc...

The dialog is shown because Oracle's Java has only partial 'JVMCapabilities' set and advertises itself as command-line-only capable.

As a superuser (use 'sudo' if editing in Terminal), you should edit /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk.1.7.[version-and-release].jdk/Contents/Info.plist and find the following key:

  <array>
    <string>CommandLine</string>
  </array>

and add it to include the missing values:

<key>JVMCapabilities</key>
  <array>
    <string>CommandLine</string>
    <string>JNI</string>
    <string>BundledApp</string>
  </array>

After that, you have to either reboot, logout or killall Finder, what ever seems to work. (People have reported that restarting Finder was enough, but I had to log out.)
