MacOS – How to search for .zip files instead of all compressed files

How do you search for a file of a specific type in OS X Yosemite? I cannot seem to find any instructions on how to do this.

In the Finder search I enter: kind:zip

But it returns all compressed files. I only want zip files – so this AD post does not help me much. All the solutions either use bash, or I cannot find the options they refer to.

Open a new finder window and type "zip" in the search. Select "Zip archive" in "kinds".

You can also just type out kind:.zip and press enter and you'll get the appropriate filter:

Note - omitting the . after the : results in many compressed files and not just those with .zip extension or literal conformance to that specification.

An ideal solution would be a single key press that is relatively intuitive and consistent with other keyboard interface rules. Nonetheless, I have found a couple of hacks that seems to work.

Cmd+[ then Cmd+]: This navigates back then forward. After this has occurred the focus is on the file list. A mild nuisance with this option is that the search is refreshed, which can lead to a brief lag.
Cmd+Shift+G followed by escape: This opens the go to folder dialog box; escape exits the dialog box and returns focus on the file list.

You can set up a Finder search like this:

- None of the following is true:
- - Filename contains .
- - Kind is Folder

The Finder does however exclude some system items from search results. The same search criteria produced 19'077 search results in Finder and 131'666 in HoudahSpot.
