I'd like to run applescript to control Excel on a headless Mac.
I want to do it from the command line via ssh, and I cannot – there is no display to run applescript on, so osascript throws an error.
I know there is on a Linux machine with X11 – I'm hoping something similar is available, but how to do this on a Mac?
So if I am not mistaken the the problem you have with VNC currently is that it is sharing the current Mac user's screen with apps open that you don't want to see on your other computer? Lion introduces the ability to screen share users that are logged in the background. Quoting the text from the link:
- Enable Screen Sharing and set a VNC password.
- Take note of your computer’s IP address.
- Fire up a VNC client on another machine.
- Connect to your computer’s IP address along with the password you set earlier.
- You will see the Mac OS X login screen that appears when you first start the computer. If you log into the currently active user you will be controlling the computer’s screen. If you select a different user, you will be logged into that user’s desktop in the background. It will not affect what what is seen on the physical computer screen.
You will likely just need to create another user for sharing.

What is you create an Automator script to take a screen capture, and then run that using the terminal?
Similar to what is described in this TUAW article, however, without the part that mails the screen capture to you.
Save the Automator script as an application, SSH in, and run open /path/to/the/automator.app

You can use VNC to log into the mac from a client machine (iOS, android, PC, Mac) and establish the UI session, set excel to launch at boot and set the user account to automatically log in.
With remote working all the rage, apps like TeamViewer also work in headless Mac situations if you don’t want to vpn in to your local network.
Barring an assist, your remote access to the computer might need to allow ssh, and perhaps remote apple script so
sshandosascriptcould remotely script things directly from AppleScript.
