Does anyone know how to make the great-looking magnifying glass, shown in Apple's image, shown below? I really like the shadow! I'd love to know what software Apple uses for this.

Simple answer: Not really.
You can, however, enable the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" option in the Keyboard preference pane:
... and then use BetterTouchTool to map F4 to Expose.
By doing this, all functions of your current function keys won't work and you'll have to remap all of them using BTT as you like.

In Preview you can now add shadowed magnification. I think this was new in El Capitain. But it is not the same shadow. My guess is that effect is produced in Quartz Composer (if they want to "eat their own dog food").
