I'm used to switching tabs with cmd+x where x is a number and takes me to tab x in firefox and pretty much every other browser I've ever used.
I like safari's speed and would like to try it a bit, but the cmd+x shortcut is burned in my brain and every time I use safari I end up screwing up.
I'd like to know if its possible to change this behavior, because this simple thing is a stopper for me.

If you are running the latest version of Safari, you can pinch in on a trackpad to reveal all of your tabs. You can swipe through this list using two fingers or by clicking on the dots below the previews.
The keyboard shortcuts to switch between tabs in Safari are cmd-shift-{ (previous tab) and cmd-shift-} (next tab).
You can also use cmd-1, cmd-2, etc. to jump to the tab that corresponds with that number, up to 8 (e.g. cmd-5 will jump to the fifth tab from the left, from whichever tab you're currently on). cmd-9 will jump to the right-most tab.
