MacOS – How to define the VPN PPTP port in OSX Lion

Is there any change to set the port to use when connecting to a PPTP VPN from a Mac?

I configured a VPN at home from Server 2008 so I can access my home server and use ports like RDP, VNC, IMAPS (Gmail), …, that are blocked.

The problem is that port 1723 is also blocked. So I configured my home router to accept requests on port 443 (HTTPS) and forward it to port 1723 of the VPN Server.

Can I tell the OSX to use port 443 instead of 1723 for that VPN connection?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to change OS X's built-in PPTP client's port. However, you can use a third-party client such as OpenVPN. OpenVPN has many more options and will allow you to specify the port with which to connect to the server.

I hooked my laptop up to my WAP, which was a linksys router set to be "bridge-only" mode and should not be doing any actual routing. With this, I was able to reach the internal IPs without issue.

So I rebooted the WAP and the problem cleared up. I guess it had nothing to do with OSX/Apple after all, and just a bug in the linksys bridge-only code.

Unable to SSH to OS X Server over alternate port

Here are steps to get SSH listening on port 443. Note that if you have SIP disabled, you can directly edit (as root) /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh.plist and therefore can skip steps 1 and 3, and use the above path in steps 2 and 5. Note in that case you will want to run the unload command before editing ssh.plist.

Copy the existing ssh.plist file into /Library:

sudo cp /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh.plist /Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh2.plist

Edit the file as root:

sudo nano /Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh2.plist

There are two things that need to be changed. First is the <Label>. Change this:

<key>Label</key>
<string>com.openssh.sshd</string>

To something like this:

<key>Label</key>
<string>com.openssh.sshd443</string>

Next change this:

                <key>SockServiceName</key>
                <string>ssh</string>

To this:

                <key>SockServiceName</key>
                <string>443</string>

Save and then run this command to load the service:

sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh2.plist

If you ever need to unload it, you can do so with:

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/ssh2.plist
