MacOS – Finder shows sizes greyed out and folders empty

In Lion, Finder shows sizes greyed out and when I open folders, they seem empty.

Upon "Get Info": they also look full with normal sized files.

WHy? How do I fix this?

As best as I can tell, the file sizes are greyed out while Finder works to calculate the current size of the folder. If you wait a moment and let Finder works its magic, you'll see the file sizes appear in the usual black font.

Can't say I've ever seen that sort of behaviour before, I'm not really sure what might have caused it, but I've got two things to test.

First off, it's possible that the folders got hidden for some reason. Try running

chflags -R nohidden ~/Pictures/Photo\ Booth\ Archive/*

If that doesn't work, see if you can access the folders directly in the Finder by focusing the Finder, pressing ⌘ cmd + ⇧ shift + G and entering the full path of one of the folders into the "Go to the folder:" dialog. If Finder can get there, then there's likely some setting hiding them from view; if not, then there's some reason Finder can't properly access the actual directories on disk.

MacOS – Two Applications folders, one empty

The Application folder inside your home folder is for apps which are restricted to your user. So some applications choose to "install" or copy their application in this folder. It's based on the decision of the app creator. But most of the apps are installed in the /Applications folder.

Apple decided to hide the /Users folder. That's it.

With this command:

sudo chflags nohidden /Users

unhides it.
