I was wanting to reveal the EFI password on my Mac using this in the Terminal:
sudo nvram security-password
but instead of outputting hex data, it gives me this:
nvram: Error getting variable - 'security': (iokit/common) data was not found
I know there is a FW password because I get the lock when holding Option on boot. Any ideas why this isn't working? I have admin access.

You can remove the firmware password by changing the RAM configuration, booting up to the startup menu, shutting down and changing it back. Basically, if you have two 1GB chips of RAM in there now, you can remove one of the chips, start up holding alt/option, shut down and put the other chip back in. This will remove the firmware password.
Now, you can follow these instructions for doing the erase and install.

Apple Support Document HT1352 states:
Use a secure password that contains both numerals and letters in the first eight characters.
I assume from this statement that OF ignores the 9th and succeeding characters in the chosen password, but I haven't tested to see if this is the case. Further down in the document, an image of the Firmware Password Utility window states unambiguously that passwords composed of letters and numbers only should be entered:
