MacOS – Duplicated table in Numbers

I think I have exactly the problem described here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250476270?answerId=250909160022#250909160022 – Numbers apparently drawing the spreadsheet on top of itself, offset, for no obvious reason. Presumably I hit the wrong shortcut key and didn't notice at the time.

I assume the given answer will solve my problem… but I don't understand what it's telling me to do, and I don't seem to be able to add a comment to the thread. What it suggests doing is as follows:

Select both, then open the format inspector, choose Table and check the Table Names checkbox.

Both tables should have the same name. The duplicate will have " – 1" added to the end.

Afte checking that any recent editing has been done in the origina (and repeating it there if that is not the case)l, delete the duplicate.

This isn't at all clear to me.

How do I "select both"?

I have the format inspector opened… I think… but there is no Table Names checkbox. (Maybe this is due to my failure to "select both"?)

How do I "delete the duplicate"?

(OS 10.14.6, Numbers 10.1 (6913))

The table is selected by clicking the little circle thing.

There's no need to fiddle about as suggested in the forum post - just press the Delete key to delete it.

How to do a pivot table in Numbers

Assuming the tables are named Original and Pivot, the cells in Pivot are filled using this formula:

=SUMIFS(Original::$C, Original::$A, "="& $A2, Original::$B, "="& B$1)

i.e. sum values in Original::$C if

corresponding value in Original::$A = value in first column of Pivot
corresponding value in Original::$B = value in first row of Pivot

The 'all' values are just simple sums of those rows or columns.

How to sort a Numbers’ table using data from another table

Thanks to your sample file, I think I was able to do what you wished.

Using an additional column to bring in the numbers corresponding to the codes (16AA, 1; 16AE, 2...) sorting by that column then hiding it the desired result was accomplished. To refresh the sort after adding data, unhide the column and sort again.

Here are the steps:

Create new column to the left of the "Code" column.
Add a formula to extract the proper number for each code and copy down.
Formula: =INDEX (Group::c, MATCH (B, Group::A))

(Using INDEX(MATCH) is a good way to get column data with out worrying about extra columns being added as is the case with VLOOKUP.)

Copy the formula down, sort the column and hide it if desired.
