MacOS – Disable Calendar Location Correction in Yosemite

In Yosemite, the Calendar application will automatically clean up addresses entered in the Location field of a calendar entry. Unfortunately, it does so badly. For example, an entry for Brasserie Zedel, 20 Sherwood Street W1F 7ED gets corrected to 20 Sherwood Street London England W1F 7ED United Kingdom, adding some information that's not needed (London, England and United Kingdom are all pretty much implicit) but deleting the crucial item, the name of the restaurant. Is it possible to disable this flawed autocorrection? Disabling general text autocorrection does not do the trick.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

The iCalendar specification outlines what is required in an .ics file. In short, a simple .ics file looks like this:

The UID is a unique identifier. It's mostly used for sequencing multiple iCalendar requests. The iCalendar specification gives guidance for how to create it:

A good method to assure uniqueness is to put the domain name or a domain literal IP address of the host on which the identifier was created on the right-hand side of an "@", and on the left-hand side, put a combination of the current calendar date and time of day (i.e., formatted in as a DATE-TIME value) along with some other currently unique (perhaps sequential) identifier available on the system (for example, a process id number). Using a DATE-TIME value on the left-hand side and a domain name or domain literal on the right-hand side makes it possible to guarantee uniqueness since no two hosts should be using the same domain name or IP address at the same time. Though other algorithms will work, it is RECOMMENDED that the right-hand side contain some domain identifier (either of the host itself or otherwise) such that the generator of the message identifier can guarantee the uniqueness of the left-hand side within the scope of that domain.

Most calendar applications are pretty forgiving of malformed .ics files. If your events are pretty simple (no recurrence, no invitations, etc), it's probably not too difficult to knock together an AppleScript (or whatever scripting language you prefer) to create these for you. Here's one AppleScript for it from StackOverflow.

Start time in Calendar

There appears to be a misunderstanding about what the "Day starts at" and "Day ends at" settings do in Mavericks. The underlying idea is that these are your work hours.

Back when it was still called iCal, this caused portions of days outside that range to be shaded, to show they were off-hours. Now, however, the only effect these settings have (from what I have been able to find) is that they are used to determine which address is the starting location, for estimating travel time to an event. During work hours, your "work" address is used, and during other hours, your "home" address is used.

This is overridden by Calendar if there is an event (with a location) within the three hours prior to an event's start time, in which case the starting location is assumed to be the prior event's location. If you don't have work and/or home addresses set in your contact card in Contacts, Calendar will use your computer's current location (if available).

Regardless of the "Day starts at" and "Day ends at" settings (and even prior to Mavericks), the entire day will always be shown.
