MacOS – Customise iTerm sudo password prompt

Recently iTerm started showing an emoji key instead of the sexy key symbol at password prompts.

It now shows this:

But I don't like the ugly emoji there.

I want to see (this is what it looks like on Terminal.app):

How can I get it to look like the symbol above?

It almost seems like Terminal.app makes the key symbol part of the cursor (it blinks with the cursor).

I found the setting that turns this off, it's in advanced preferences. Not sure you can make it look like the normal terminal one, but this might help folks that want to get rid of the key entirely.

iTerm2 > Preferences > Advanced > Experimental Features > "Show key at cursor at password prompt" => No

Try wrapping your RPROMPT in single quotes. I've seen double quotes cause issues for others with their prompts before.

I would also ditch the precmd > setprompt process for the moment and just set RPROMPT directly to simplify for testing. Start with something like

precmd() {
  ...
}
PROMPT=$'\n$(rb_prompt) in $(directory_name) $(git_dirty)$(need_push)\n› '
RPROMPT='%{$fg_bold[cyan]%}$(todo)%{$reset_color%}'

and refine from there.

MacOS – Mavericks update changes sshd_config

I had the same problem and found the answer here: Mavericks update broke ssh key-based authentication

Basically, you can't use authorized_keys2 anymore (an old default). Rename the file to "authorized_keys" and it should work again (it did so for me).

mv ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
