There are many webpages given over to listing defaults commands in order to configure various parts of the OS. Some of them include the flag -currentHost.

The man page for the defaults command documents the option -currentHost, as "restricting preferences operations to the host that the user is currently logged in on."

Similarly, the -host flag allows a hostname to be specified for the preference.

What is the purpose of explicitly setting these flags? Under what circumstances would a preference affect some other host? (Or indeed, when would a user be logged in on a different host?)

In the case of networked accounts and networked home folders, a user can login to any Mac on for example a company network and see their own files and have their own preferences set.

This is the case where you can use the -host feature. Say that you want for example one wallpaper on your own desktop, but another when you login to the shared office Mac in the meeting room. Or any other type of setting than wall paper ofcourse.

The network library is intended for client computers bound to a network domain server. A domain server acts as a central repository for configuration information -- mostly user accounts, but also (among other things) mount records. Mount records tell the client computers to automatically mount a certain file server share point automatically. If you use this to tell all the clients to mount a particular share point on /Network/Library, then you can put Preferences, Fonts, etc folders inside that share point and they'll be automatically available on all clients in the network domain.

This used to be a common way to manage network clients in NextStep (the predecessor of OS X), but is very rarely used in OS X. There are better ways to do most thing now, like putting managed preference settings directly in the network domain. At this point, the network library is more of a historical artifact than anything else...

How to change tap to click using “defaults write” from command line

Got it to work. The correct format (for me) is:

defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain com.apple.mouse.tapBehavior -int 0

Change 0 to 1 if you want to enable the tap-to-click. This seems to be really sensitive to which version you are using. The commands in the question have worked for others.

Logout - login is required for this to work.
