MacOS – Can’t install programs nor change system settings because admin password is not recognized on Mac OS Lion

I can't install programs nor change system settings. I have admin privileges and I can successfully login into my account. I can even perform admin operations in terminal using sudo command.

But, when I try to install new software and enter the admin password, it always give me an "incorrect password" message.

Have you done any of the obvious fixes yet?

repair file system
repair permissions
check keyboard encoding when prompted for password entry
...

Have you looked into the system.log for possible hints?

If a plist is owned by root and writable by a user other than root, that's a security issue.

You can change the owner to root with sudo chown root <filename>, and change the permissions with sudo chmod 644 <filename> (4 for read access, 2 for write access, 1 for execute access, added up. The first number is for the owner, the second for the group, the third for everyone.)

I'd try writing a simple script:

#!/bin/bash
sudo /usr/bin/id

save this as something.command, change its permissions to executable with chmod +x, and then run this from AppleScript with

osascript -e 'do shell script "open -a Terminal ./something.command"'

Instead of /usr/bin/id you can call whatever script you need to run with admin privileges then.

EDIT:

This will work:

osascript -e 'do shell script "sudo /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app/Contents/MacOS/Terminal" with administrator privileges'
