Since there isn't an answer, I wanted to chime in.
Thanks to the comment, I can confirm deleting and re-adding the printer did the trick.
Have you installed the latest Mountain Lion ready drivers for the unit?
When you are adding the printer, what options are you using to choose the drivers?
If you choose "Auto Select" from the "Use" drop down that may be your issue.
If you choose "Select Printer Software" does the Canon software show?

Perhaps you should try the GutenPrint print drivers. These open source drivers work for a huge number of printers, the Selphy CP770 and 790 are listed as supported so either of those might work.
The drivers work with all versions of OS X.
