Since I updated to Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.2) all pictogram fonts (Zapf Dingbats, Webdings et al.) seem to be broken.
The application I have tested are below.
TextEdit
Zapf Dingbats and Webdings do not show up in the font menu. You can select it by selecting :
Format > Show Fonts…
OmniGraffle
Selecting either Zapf Dingbats or Webdings has no effect.
Pixelmator
Selecting either Zapf Dingbats or Webdings has no effect.
BBEdit
It seems to work in BBEdit (and TextWrangler), these both have Cocoa text handling.
I have tested this on a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro running 10.7.2.
Firstly, can someone confirm this is an issue for them and not just an artefact of the way I have installed Lion.
Secondly, any solutions?
Update
I forgot to add that all front look fine in Font Book
Update 2
Unfortunately Chris' idea is no good (for my specific issue) as the character I require is the lighting bolt.
Best Answer
As Chris Redman said, the fonts are fine.
To access the glyphs in this font, you'll need to use the Character Palette.
Follow the directions he gave to show the Character Palette, then click on the Action button in the upper left corner of the window and choose
Customize List…
. Scroll down in the list and choose Dingbats, like shown in the image below:Then choose the Dingbats category in the main window, then choose the appropriate font in the popup menu in the center column. The lightning bolt is shown in the image below.
As you can see, the Unicode value of that glyph is
U+F07E
, which is way the heck out of the range that you're going to be able to reach with your keyboard alone.P.S. Both BBEdit and TextWrangler are Carbon-based apps. (Well, they could be hybrid, but the majority of the text-handling appears to be Carbon (HITextView?)).
