MacBook – Why won’t the Mac start

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch and something really weird happened.

Earlier today it worked perfectly fine, a few hourslater I tried to turn it on and it was stuck at the startup. It has a little progress bar and the spinning wheel. I have tried the safe boot but it won't work, either.

The best bet is to take it to apple if you have it under warranty. They will most likely go in the back and reset it and most likely that will fix it. I had a USB error not that long ago, so I took it to Apple. They reset my computer, and it fixed it. Nothing was deleted/lost, and rebooted perfectly fine. Only problem is it runs a tiny bit slow once you reboot, but it will work itself out after a bit of use.

About three years ago, I ran into the exact same problem you're having. The issue is with the hard drive itself--nothing software related. Take it to the nearest/best Apple repair store and have them replace your hard drive. You can then restore all of your information from your backup. You do back up your computer, don't you?

(Note: if you forgot to back up your computer recently or otherwise cannot access your old files, the repair shop will most likely be able to recover most, if not all, of your data. If the HDD is really badly damaged, however, you're best bet is to send it to DriveSavers for a cleanroom disassembly and data recovery. If you choose that option, however, be prepared to spend several hundred dollars.)

EFI firmware updates are 'staged' in the normally hidden EFI partition on your disk, which typically resides at device /dev/disk0s1.

Once in single-user mode, you can create a folder in which to mount this partition, then mount it like so:

mkdir /Volumes/efi
mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/efi

From here, navigate into the /EFI/APPLE/FIRMWARE/ sub-folder of the EFI partition.

If you find some files here, probably these are what your MacBook is trying to process and getting stuck on. You can safely delete them and reboot.
