MacBook Pro Connects to Wi-Fi but not the Internet

I am on a MacBook Pro 2012 running macOS 10.11.

Recently, I have been having a problem with my Wi-Fi. Specifically, whenever I disconnect from one Wi-Fi network and attempt to connect to another in a different location, I get no internet. The signal says I am fully connected to the new network, but I cannot access the internet.

Restarting the computer solves the problem, but it is a pain to restart the computer every time I want to connect to a different network as I travel with my computer a lot.

I recently installed VPN software and suspect this may be the root of the problem because I never had this problem before the VPN.

Can anyone give me some ideas to fix this?

Seamus is right, it seems an issue related to network and not your MacBook Pro, though, you could execute network diagnostic Utility.

The Network Diagnostics utility will guide you through a series of questions and tests, based on your ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to network configuration and DNS servers. Sometimes the utility is able to fix issues by itself , but,when it can’t, it usually provides lots of useful info regarding the nature of the problem as well as to offer several suggestions in order to fix network issues.

regarding VPN, could you tell me if you use more IP at the same time ?

Edit: Apple released two updates for the MBP this week, including an EFI update. While neither update explicitly mentioned wireless connectivity, the update seems to have partially fixed the problem. After installing both updates, I get a pretty consistent 3-5 ms ping with a very very occasional spike to 100. At least it's much better than before.

In the meantime, the trick below still works if you want a 1 ms response instead.

There's an interesting tip from someone on Apple's discussion forums that can work as a workaround.

It appears that if the network card is inactive for more than 200 ms, it powers down and has to be powered up to send network traffic again, hence the random spikes. But, if you can keep the network card active (at the cost of a small amount of CPU power and some extra traffic), then the latency goes away.

The command recommended by seanfromcolumbus was:

sudo ping -i .2 192.168.1.1

(The -i .2 specifies an interval of 200 ms)

Indeed, with this running, I get consistent results of <2 ms.

MacBook connects to network over Ethernet but not WiFi

Under System Preferences > Network, choose AirPort, click on Advanced, select the name of your wireless network and click the - button to remove it. Turn AirPort off, wait a few, turn it back on, and try reconnecting to it.

You might also want to open the Terminal up and run the command:

dscacheutil -flushcache

Failing that, create a brand-new user account on the MacBook, log into that account, and see if it can connect.
