MacBook Pro Display – Can’t Change Screen Brightness

On my MacBook Pro 2012, I can't change the screen brightness. When I click on the brightness keyboard controls, nothing happens. Under System Preferences → Displays, the Brightness slider is missing:

I have also tried with an AppleScript and when I run it, I hear an error sound:

tell application "System Events"
    key code 107
end tell

Where does the problem come from? How do I adjust the brightness?

Restarting the Mac fixed the issue for me. I can now set the screen brightness alright.

Apparently it's a mysterious bug in macOS.

You might not need to activate Firefox if it's the current active app. Them you just need :

tell application "System Events"

System event key codes not working on thunderbolt display

Did you try key code 113 using control down? Pressing the brightness keys while holding control normally changes the brightness of a Thunderbolt Display, but I don't know if it works with keys like F15.

You can also use brightness.c to change the brightness of different displays:
