Macbook PRO 2017 touchbar – Screen won’t turn on sometimes

Sometimes when I open the lid of my MBP, the screen won't turn on.
No black screen – the screen is just completely off.

macOS is definitely running on the background, since I hear sounds, the touch bar is active, and I can use the caps lock key – the light goes on and off.

To get it working I close and open the lid again multiple times, until the screen comes up.

I wonder if this is a sign that I'll have a bricked MPB soon.

These symptoms sounds like a flimsy display cable issue - where backlight shutdown occurs after opening the display to a certain degree.

If so, you'd unfortunately have to get your whole screen replaced. AFAIK, Apple only has a replacement program for 2016 MBP models despite it affecting later models as well. Best of luck.

pmset -g assertions

to list a summary of power assertions. Assertions may prevent system sleep or display sleep.

In my case I had a print job in queue that was preventing sleep.

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.

How to reset PRAM: restart or power up your Mac and immediately hold down the Command ⌘+Option ⌥+P+R keys all at the same time. Keep holding them down until the Mac resets. Also, on these old models you used to have to do it a few times: i.e., just keep holding down and let it reset a few times, before it would be completely clean.

Resetting the SMC is a bit more model-specific and I can't remember off the top of my head what you needed to do with your model, but you'll find instructions here, or you can Google your model number with "reset SMC".
