After plugging my headphones out, suddenly there is no sound from the internal speakers.
When I press volume buttons, I see a circle-backslash symbol below the speaker icon.
Restarting doesn't help. However I do hear the startup chime.
What should I do?
You can solve this problem physically with an extension cable.
Check the tip of the extension cable (the male end) for the number of rings. If it only has 2, it is only recognized as a pair of headphones. The third ring carries microphone audio which you'll see on the end of the headset cable.
Try switching back to your internal speakers with [alt]-clicking on the speaker icon in menubar. Many interfaces don't support volume adjustment and thus the control becomes greyed out.

Gently pluginng the headphones in and out of the jack solved the issue.
