MacBook – Mac book pro early 2011 won’t boot

my mac book pro 2011 started having weird instances where it would just cut off and shut down immediately. Then when I tried powering it on, the indicator light would light up for 1 or 2 seconds before completely cutting off as if it were a power failure.

Sometimes I managed to boot it up again after waitint for awhile and I managed to do an aht test on it, revealing no problems with memory or the logic board.

What could be causing all this?

Edit: sometimes I get about 5 minutes of usage before it shuts down completely again.

The repairman said that it's a logic board failure. I sent it for repair and am currently waiting for news on what could be the cause. Anyway its gonna cost $350 sgd for the repairs.

Once you've gotten your backup - get into Disk Utility and try to repair the disk / consider an erase install. It will likely fail (unless the delay was caused by a very unlikely file system corruption or startup conflict).

Dropping a clean install - only the OS will let you know right away if the Hard Drive (HDD) can take new data or if other hardware issues are causing the half hour delay. Something fairly destructive is needed to cause a mac to take that long to successfully boot. Take it to a hardware tech if you have any doubts how to troubleshoot this, but odds are it's storage related.

Get the original DVD of your MacBook Pro, and boot it with the D key pressed. This will fire the Apple Hardware Test.

If you can have an hand on your system for enough time, open it to a remote access from another computer on your network (Ethernet or Wireless):

System Preferences > Sharing

enable:

Screen Sharing

Next time your display doesn't let you talk to your MacBook Pro, try to access it from your other computer and check that your MacBook Pro is up and running (this is my blind bet, please confirm ☺).

If it is running,

don't any more use the ^ ctrl⇧ shift⌥ alt while powering it off when your OS is up and running
rather make it remotely shutdown, wait 15 seconds, and then apply the above 4 simultaneous button press to reset the SMC.
