Blender requires F-keys such as F12 and numpad. The numpad emulation works for me, but I am unable to get the function keys such as F1, F4 and F12 working. For example, F12 should do rendering. So how can I use Blender with a MacBook?

The page up Key is mapped to fn + Arrow UP.
Other key combinations with fn and the arrow keys are:
- Arrow down > page down
- Arrow left > beginning of line or begin of page depending on situation
- Arrow right > end of line or bottom of page depending on situation
For the Insert Key there's no correspondant key on a Mac keyboard, but you could try using the fn + Enter which I found here. I can't confirm this though as I absolutely have no idea where I could test this out.
Well I actually just figured this out. In Preferences under Mission Control there were two options set to use the F11 and F12 keys. I set these to '-' and that fixed the issue. The options that were set to use these function keys are highlighted in the screenshot below.

You have two options; either hold down fn as L2G suggested, or switch to the F1 etc. keys to work like that directly.
This can be setup in keyboard preferences here:
If you do that, F1 will work as the actual F1 key. If you want to use it for controlling the brightness, you'd hit fn with it.
