MacBook – Apple USB ethernet adapter is not detected

I have a Macbook Air running 10.7.4 and I'm trying to connect to ethernet using the official Apple USB to ethernet adapter. However, the mac never detects the new network interface. It never displays a dialog asking me to set it up. It doesn't show up in network preferences. As far as I can tell, the mac doesn't know it's even plugged in.

I've verified both the adapter and the ethernet cable I'm using work with another mac. I've tried both USB ports on the Air.

Anyone have an idea how I can troubleshoot this? Is there a USB utility that I could check out?

I had the same problem and a couple of minutes ago I saw something about the "Android File Transfer Agent" having problems with the device. So uninstalled "iSyncr" software (sync android over Wifi), disconnected the usb device, plugged it again and now it's working fine.

If you needed to register your MAC address for your computer to be authorized on the network at work, then your problem may be that you have inadvertantly registered the MAC address for the original USB-ethernet adaptor, rather than the MAC address of the internal ethernet interface in you computer. The problem is that the new USB adaptor generates a different MAC address than your old one, and is therefore not recognized by your work network.

To fix this problem, you will need to plug in your new USB ethernet adaptor, get its MAC address and request that this MAC address be authorized on your work network.

You can find the MAC address for your USB ethernet adaptor using System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced... -> Hardware. This will give you the MAC address on the en1 ethernet interface going to the adaptor, rather than the en0 interface going to the computer. The en1 MAC address changes when plug in different USB ethernet adaptors, but the en0 does not.

To see how en1 MAC address changes and find the stable en0 MAC address of your ethernet card, open up a terminal window and type:

$ ifconfig

Then plug in your different adpators, and repeat the ifconfig command.

For reasons best known to itself, Apple chose not to include updated drivers for the A1277 adapter when it released Mavericks. In the screenshot you provided, the 'Product ID: 0x1402' in reference to your adapter reveals it was manufactured by ASIX Electronics, and further indicates that ASIX designates it internally as a model AX88772C. (This information comes from the massive OUI database of model and vendor codes maintained by the IEEE.)

Happily enough, even though Apple no longer continues to support the product, ASIX does. Their current driver version (2.2.0) for the A1277 / AX88772C includes support not only for Mavericks, but for Yosemite as well.
