Recently, I bought my very first MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
I am hesitating between having a screen protector or not.
Some claim that a protector can prevent the retina display from scratch, while others say that one can only get the best out of the retina display without any extra protection.
Is such a protector worthwhile?
Will the screen get scratched when I use a cloth to clean it, if I do not have the protector?
I had a screen protector on my iPad for exactly 2 days. I bought an anti-glare one because I found that the matte finish made fingerprints much less of a problem on my iPhone. Unfortunately, I managed to get a few tiny creases when I applied it, causing annoying bubbles. I found the feel of the touch screen was not as good, and felt the film reduced the beauty and clarity of the display.
Ultimately I removed it and, so far, I have not gotten any scratches. I do keep my iPad in Belkin Grip Swell case, and put that in a Case Logic netbook sleeve when not in use. I also clean it frequently with a 3M microfiber cloth.

There are several companies which offers you all 5 points.
I've got a lot of experience with the Zagg Invisible Shields. They offer great quality and lifetime guarantee. But they are a bit expensive though. Quality comes at his price.
Then there is BodyGuardz. A bit cheaper, lifetime replacements as well but I don't have any experience with it. And they don't seems to offer a specific protector for the new iPad, but the protector of the iPad 2 will fit.

The points raised are both correct. While having the protector will prevent scratches on the screen, it will also reduce the quality of the display quite significantly. When I bought my Mac, I was also met with this dilemma. After having tried the best screen protector that the Apple Store had, I decided not to go with one. The display doesn't really scratch all that much, and I have not been able to induce a scratch even after using a cheap cloth. I would suggest you to use a screen cleaning liquid every time you use a cloth, as that is how I have been able to prevent the scratches.
