macOS Dvorak Keyboard – How to Type Chinese Pinyin Tones

I want to type in Chinese pinyin and found a website, but it only works for second (é) and fourth (è) tones. The first and third tones don't work on Dvorak, as Option + a and Option + k input å and ˚, respectively.

In Dvorak, how can I type in these remaining Chinese tones?

You can only type 3 tones on Dvorak (or on US for that matter). To include the 3rd tone you have to use ABC Extended, which is qwerty. You can make a custom Dvorak layout which adds the missing tone with Ukelele.

You set the Latin keyboard layout for Japanese input in the Kotoeri Preferences. For Chinese, the IM normally uses the last Latin keyboard layout that you have used.

Settings you make in the system preferences/language & text/language or formats tab are irrelevant for the keyboard layout. Only the input sources tab affects that (and Kotoeri preferences when that is chosen as an input source).

◊ Option modifier is currently non-functional. Also, you cannot replace a default Roman layout with this one. Control keys should now be functional.

Option worked everywhere I tested, so non-functional could just mean that states under option don't output non-ASCII characters. If you want to disable all other input sources, you can edit the HIToolBox plist.

Instructions for older versions of Programmer Dvorak:

Open /Library/Keyboard Layouts/Programmer Dvorak.bundle/Contents/Resources/Programmer Dvorak.keylayout

And add this to modifierMap:
