I have 900 apps on my Mac because I sync both my iPhone and iPad.
There are a lot of apps that I deleted a long time ago which are useless. I have amassed 40gb of apps.
Is there a quick way to delete all the useless apps?

At the moment, you can't really do this. Although I suspect that Apple is looking to integrate iOS and macOS in the future so that this sort of thing can be done (purely speculation).
GarageBand on the Mac is different from the iPad version (it's more comprehensive) and it has been available on macOS for far longer than on iOS.
It is possible to run iOS apps in the Simulator app that comes with Xcode. However, it's not as simple as downloading an app from the App Store. You'd have to get the source code for the app, compile it in Xcode and run in the Simulator. Most apps being closed source, this won’t be possible!
In iTunes in the left hand sidebar go to Apps into the Library selection. If you delete the app there it will not show up in the sync section. In case you need it again you can always download it from the Store again (as long as it is available there).

You could right click on any app in iTunes
Appssection, clickShow in Finder, then sort byDate Modifiedand erase all those that haven't been updated in a long time and that you don't use. Be careful because one of your preferred app might not have been updated recently.
