I have a Time Machine back up setup on a Freenas 9.3 server. It works really slowly via WiFi attached to my broadband router. So, I attached it directly to my iMac via Ethernet instead – a full backup takes less than 2 hours now. Problem is how can other Macs on the network see the Freenas server through the IMac Ethernet connection via WIFI? I know the IP address of the Freenas server but can't figure out how I can Time Machine back up my Macbookair via Wifi?

It could be an duplex mismatch problem: small packets, like the ones ping sends, get through while large packets (as generated when browsing the web) get delayed or lost, which leads to poor performance.
This problem may arise either when the autonegotiation process between your Mac Mini and the Netgear minihub fails or when speed/duplex mode are set manually and don't match at both ends.
To solve the problem you first need to check the Ethernet settings:
- Open System Preferences>Network, select Ethernet from the list on the left and click Advanced....
- Select the Hardware tab.

If configure is set to "Automatically":
autonegotiation is on. Change it to "Manually" and try different Speed and Duplex settings, for example:
until the problem is gone. Note that you must press OK for the settings to take effect.
If configure is set to "Manually", change it to "Automatically" and test.
If nothing helps, try another hub or connect your Mac directly to the router. If that solves the problem replace your hub.
The Finder uses mdns (bonjour) to populate the list of servers in the sidebar. You can look at the advertisements directly using:
dns-sd -B _afpovertcp
This will show you all the afp fileservers on the local subnet. You can replace the _afpovertcp with _smb to browse for windows fileshares. Run this command for a while and look to see if there are any "Remove" messages mentioning the file server. Time machine is likely using something similar to:
dns-sd -L servername _afpovertcp
to contact your server.
If you see a bunch of similar names with a 1 or 2... at the end, you may be seeing the server reregistering its name for some reason and not being able to get its old name. This could be due to some other network machine running a sleep proxy, and not releasing the name when it should.

Solution found:
On the iMac, we must first enable port forwarding by entering the following command in Terminal:
replace 192.168.2.x with whatever your FreeNAS is reporting as its IP address. You will also have to enter your account password when prompted. Now, in the Finder on your laptop, connect to your iMac's IP address (192.168.1.x) by typing
command + kand enteringafp://192.168.1.x:12345/. replace 192.168.1.x with whatever your iMac's IP address is, but keep:12345as it's needed to connect to your FreeNAS. You may have to select the correct disk from a list. You should now be able to add it as a Time Machine disk on your laptop.
