I need to enter recovery mode and finally remembered my firmware password using the magic at https://www.cnet.com/news/use-the-calculator-to-reveal-a-macs-firmware-password/
but the padlock screen won't let me enter anything, not even move pointer with the mouse. How can I enter my firmware password?
Apple Support Document HT1352 states:
Use a secure password that contains both numerals and letters in the first eight characters.
I assume from this statement that OF ignores the 9th and succeeding characters in the chosen password, but I haven't tested to see if this is the case. Further down in the document, an image of the Firmware Password Utility window states unambiguously that passwords composed of letters and numbers only should be entered:
USE THE WIRED KEYBOARD - Maximus put me on the right path - my iMac wouldn't respond to the startup key sequences using the Bluetooth keyboard; the wired keyboard worked perfectly. My DVD drive doesn't work, so I tried making a bootable usb hard drive and then a bootable usb flash drive from my Snow Leopard Installation DVD, and couldn't get the iMac to see either of them, I thought, when actually the problem was the iMac wasn't seeing the startup key sequences from the Bluetooth keyboard. Removed a memory stick and rebooted into recovery and from there I was able to remove the firmware password (which recovery didn't see as being active, so I created a new one and then disabled it)
