Mac – Cannot install MacVim 7.4 on OS X Maverick 10.9.4

I have brew installed (v 0.9.5) along with Xcode (Version 5.1.1 (5B1008)). When I attempt to install MacVim like so I encounter the following error message:

$ brew install macvim

How can I resolve this issue?

NOTE: Much of what I've found seems to state that I need to install some command line component to Xcode but I wasn't able to figure out what this actually entailed.

I solved this issue thanks to the following tip I found as to how to install Xcode from the MacPorts page.

2.1.1. Install Xcode on OS X 10.9 or later

Download the latest version of Xcode from the Apple developer website or get it using the Mac App Store. Once you have Xcode installed, open a terminal, run xcode-select --install, and click the Install button to install the required command line developer tools. Don't worry if you see a message telling you the software cannot be installed because it is not currently available from the Software Update Server. This usually means you already have the latest version installed. You can also get the command line tools from the Apple developer website.

The key piece of information was to run this command:

$ xcode-select --install

ss#1

After installing the command line tools you should be able to successfully install macvim using brew.

$ brew install macvim
==> Downloading https://github.com/b4winckler/macvim/archive/snapshot-73.tar.gz
Already downloaded: /Library/Caches/Homebrew/macvim-7.4-73.tar.gz

Run `brew linkapps` to symlink these to /Applications.

Here is the procedure I recommend, for those who are comfortable with the command-line and with Homebrew:

Install Homebrew.

Run the following on the command line (in Terminal):

brew install macvim --with-override-system-vim
brew linkapps

Edit your shell startup files to ensure that /usr/local/bin comes first in your $PATH.

If you use vim as $VISUAL or $EDITOR, add `export VISUAL='mvim -f' to your environment (details).

Check that you installed everything correctly by running

brew doctor

Now, you can run the graphical MacVim on a file by running mvim foo.txt from the command-line. Or, you can run the text-based editor by running vim foo.txt. Also, if other programs (e.g., git) fork off a separate editor, they'll run the graphical MacVim.

How to work around a “Could not resolve host: (nil)…” error when installing/using Homebrew

Seems that you have problems connecting to github via https.

While I'm not sure what could cause it and how to fix it, you still can use git with another protocol.

Here's the commands to install homebrew in /usr/local/ from scratch using git:// instead of https://:

cd /usr/local/
git init -q
git remote add origin git://github.com/mxcl/homebrew
git fetch origin master:refs/remotes/origin/master -n
git reset --hard origin/master

That should work. Please notice that if you choose to use another directory for homebrew, you probably will have to append its ./bin directory to your environment PATH variable for comfortable usage.
