Mac – Backup a Time Machine .sparsebundle to Amazon Glacier

I want to make an off-site backup of my Time Machine, and Amazon Glacier seems to be a cheap and reliable place to put large files in.

Anyone has experience using Glacier in such settings? Any tips on how to upload the files there?

The "s3cmd" tool seems to be quite popular for copying files to Amazon Glacier, either manually or via scripts:

You could also use commercial tools such as CloudBerry Backup to automatize synchronizing the Time Machine sparsebundle with Amazon Glacier.

To help figure out what these files are compressed with, you can try using the file command from the terminal. It should give you output like this:

% file archive.zip 
archive.zip: Zip archive data, at least v2.0 to extract
% file archive.tgz 
archive.gz: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Wed Aug  3 06:21:00 2005, max compression
% file srchive.bz2

Mac – How to get Time Machine disk to backup itself

It sounds like you're trying to recreate something Time Machine already does via its "Local Snapshots" feature (see here and here for info). Basically, all you need to do is configure your Mac to back up to an external drive, and then whenever that drive isn't available it'll make local snapshots instead (as long as there's disk space available).
