Mac – 2018 Mac Mini – Won’t boot when power applied

I work in an environment where power is turned off to the building nightly. On previous revisions of the Mac Mini, I was able to get them to automatically boot when power is applied (in the mornings) by doing the following:

System Preferences
Energy Saver
Schedule…
Start up or wake: 4:00 AM every day (or sometime in the middle of the night)

In that state, when power was applied at any time following 4:00 AM, the computer would boot.

The 2018 Mac Mini does not do this. I set the Schedule in the Energy Saver system preferences as above, but the computer does not turn on when power is applied. It does boot as scheduled if power is already hot, but not after.

Why would this model be different, and is there a way to restore that functionality?

Is FileVault enabled? If so, that would prevent the scheduled boot from working.

Another safe boot revealed that the auto sleep mode actually is working. I believe that it would probably have worked the last time I've tried it as well - but, since the sleep occurs several minutes later than the time defined in the Energy Saver settings, I did not notice this.

What about the 'normal' boot?

I've basically tested the auto sleep with all my menu extras enabled one by one, because the iotop command mentioned by @StuWilson didn't show anything helpful to me. As it turns out the menu extra Stack Exchange Notifier caused insomnia.

You can use pmset for that (like in pmset schedule wake "02/12/2012 12:42:00").

Setting Multiple "Power On" & Power Off" Events

Currently, it appears that pmset will NOT allow you to set more than one pair of "power on" & "power off" events when using a repeating schedule.

For example...

# pmset repeat shutdown MTWRFSU 02:00:00 wakeorpoweron MTWRFSU 06:45:00

The above command would set a repeating schedule that would shutdown the Mac nightly at 2 AM in the morning and startup daily at 6:45 AM.

But, if you want to set multiple "power on" & "power off" events, you could specify a specific date/time and with a little scripting you could setup a schedule for a month.

# pmset schedule wakeorpoweron "06/07/2007 07:00:00"
# pmset schedule shutdown "06/07/2007 22:00:00"
# pmset schedule wakeorpoweron "06/07/2007 00:00:00"
# pmset schedule shutdown "06/07/2007 01:00:00"
