I want to bind Ctrl+Tab to \033[27;5;9~ and Ctrl+Shift+Tab to \033[27;6;9~. Unless I am missing something, the default Mac OS X terminal emulator will not let you bind these key sequences to custom escape sequences like it does with the "F" keys (F1, F2, etc.) and most other keys.
Is there another terminal emulator I can use on Mac OS X that does support rebinding those keys?
iTerm 2 claims to be able to do this.

I'm not sure what's going on with you and macports, but I just installed tmux using macports. it took about 30 seconds, and was completely painless.
FWIW, I've subsequently spent enough time with GNU screen that I basically just use it for everything at this point. iTerm is nice if you want a local, mouse-driven multiplexer, but almost everything I do is server-side at this point, and doing it all over one SSH connection is much better anyways.

If you choose to use ⌥ as meta-key, ⌥+backspace will work immediately, though this setup might break special characters you can only input by pressing ⌥ together with them (depending on your keyboard layout). If you don´t use that, you can delete by pressing esc and than backspace.
For forward-deleting a whole word, use either ⌥+D or esc and than D.

One of the features of iTerm2 is that you can remap any of the keys including the ones you asked about. For instance, I remapped Ctrl+Tab to send the text
