I copied a couple dozen MP3s to an iPhone through iTunes. To play them I used VLC however VLC does not play the next song. How do I have VLC play all the music on the device without having to constantly pick up the phone, turn the screen on and manually tell it to play the next song?

This is not a fix but information sharing.
My mavericks Firewall has following settings
Use the + to add and allow connection.
I set my VLC to Block for demonstration purpose.
Here's a work-around I found:
- Create a playlist in iTunes and call it whatever you want (I called mine "existing songs").
- Go to your "All Songs" view, select your entire library, and drag it into the "existing songs" playlist. iTunes will not add missing songs to this playlist, which means "existing songs" will only include songs without an exclamation point.
- Create a new smart playlist with the rule "Playlist is not existing songs". Name it whatever you want (like "Exclamation").
- Your new smart playlist will contain only the missing songs, you can re-download them or delete them as you wish.

There's a three dot menu in the bottom right hand corner of the screen when you are playing a file...
if you tap that the top item once and you'll get "repeat one" tap it again and you get "repeat all" which when I tried it, changed the behavior from quitting at the end of a track to playing the next track.
It will also probably repeat the playlist when it gets to the end though.
