I am successfully synchronizing my iPhone contacts with my GMail account.
When adding a new contact in my GMail account, the new contact takes a few hours to sync to the device. This is cumbersome, because often I add a contact on GMail and wish to call that contact from my iPhone.
Is there a way to force an iPhone contact sync update with my GMail account, so that new contacts will be immediately updated on the iPhone?
When I had Snow Leopard I had the Google address book sync enabled and I somehow managed to put a 'sync' icon in the menu bar.
If I remember correctly I added it from the "old" iSync application (unsuccessfully trying to sync with a Samsung phone).
Now in Lion I still have it and it allows me to manually force the update of my Google address book, but I can't find how to obtain it as the iSync app seems to have disappeared.

In the settings, set your default Contacts account to Gmail.
Now whenever you create a contact on iOS, it will be added to Gmail. The only time a contact will not be added to Gmail is if you go into the Contacts application, select Groups on the top, and choose an account other than All Contacts or your Gmail account (e.g. iCloud).

External account settings can be found under Settings-> Mail, Contacts, Calendars-> Fetch New Data.
Configure the frequency of synchronization on the bottom of the screen. It is possible to update in "real time" if "Push" is turned on, but this will have a negative impact on battery life.
