iPad Pro Magic Keyboard – How to Use with Dvorak Layout

I wonder if it is possible to use Dvorak layout on the new Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro. It would be even better if I can use it without installing any third-party keyboard applications.

Also, on Mac I swapped some keys (; and ') but can I also swap the keys at my will?

Yes, you just go to settings/general/keyboard/hardware keyboard and tap over at the right edge and select Dvorak.

It is not currently possible to control a non-jailbroken iPad in the way you've described.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason it has to be an external USB keyboard and not the keyboard built into the MacBook Pro itself?

Perhaps if you mention why you'd like this functionality (e.g. game control? typing into a notepad app?), someone could propose an alternative. The Ask Different users can be quite creative when questions are worded broadly enough. :]

Edit: There is now a new version of Programmer Dvorak that works with key combinations like ⌃A, so the instructions below are no longer needed.

◊ Option modifier is currently non-functional. Also, you cannot replace a default Roman layout with this one. Control keys should now be functional.

Option worked everywhere I tested, so non-functional could just mean that states under option don't output non-ASCII characters. If you want to disable all other input sources, you can edit the HIToolBox plist.

Instructions for older versions of Programmer Dvorak:

Open /Library/Keyboard Layouts/Programmer Dvorak.bundle/Contents/Resources/Programmer Dvorak.keylayout

And add this to modifierMap:
