I need some photos that I have taken to be dated. The date must be displayed on the actual photo (in a similar fashion to how one would think of film photos), but I have no idea how to do this? My understanding is there is an app that does this, but I haven't been able to find it.
Is there an app, or any other way, that would facilitate this?
Yes - the old mobile iPhoto app as well as the Photos app shows all sorts of photo metadata (assuming you allowed the camera app to store it in the first place) including the capture time.
Camera roll and Photo stream are part of the Library, so you should be good to go. You can get the above screen by tapping the i with the rectangle to bring up the information for photos stored in the library.
In the case of time, even if you deny location services, it should have the timestamp based on the file's creation date/time.
OK, so it turns out Aperture can do it with a Smart Album.
Date lets you specify Capture Hour of Day
EXIF lets you specify Capture Hour of Day, Capture Minute of Hour and even Capture Second of Minute
Interestingly, iPhoto honours and displays this Smart Album but will not let you edit it.

DateCam S is a free app that will add the date to photos that you take automatically.
There are also apps that let you manually add any text (e.g. a date) to your photos. I have used and recommend Camera+ due to its stylistic formatting of the text.
