Is there no way to hide the clock on the iPhone 6+ lock screen?

Unfortunately not. I agree that this feature would be nice, especially since it's included on the iPad. The only way to review an email prior to sending it without having the keyboard on the screen is to save it as a draft, then reopen it. A little tedious, sure, but it might be worth it if it's a long email.

Calendar alarms obey the mute switch. Clock alarms do not.

Personally, I consider this a feature and not a bug--but I can understand why you'd at least want the option.

However, short of jailbreaking, there is currently no way to change this behavior in the Apple-provided applications.
