I want to know the resources used on the basis of applications. I found a duplicate, but the answer there has issues and since its over a year old, I decided to post a new one, instead of posting there.
The solution in the previous post was, Activity Monitor>View>"All Processes, Hierarchically". But that has an issue:
Did I do something wrong or is this a bug? Is there any other way of knowing it?
The % CPU is relative to 1 core, so 726% is using almost 8 cores. Core is loosely defined, so 1 Hyper-Threaded, "virtual" core looks like 2 cores to Activity Monitor.
What type of system do you have? If it is just 2 cores (which is seems to be) then nik's answer sounds correct.
A late model 8-core system can look like 16 cores to Activity Monitor:
I know this is old, but this feature does exist: Go to Activity Monitor, click "View" (at the top) and select "All Processes, Hierarchically".

These Google Chrome Helper processes are sub-processes of the Google Chrome app. You'll notice that the highlighted sub-process is indeed at the top of all the other sub-processes in the list - the proper hierarchy. You did nothing wrong, nor is there a bug.
