I'm using my MBP 16' in target mode to an iMac 21'5 late 2012.
I thought the audio could not be played through iMac speakers (or a digital output in this case) but when a enter Target Mode the first selection in Sound under System Preferences is the iMac. I can control volume, but no audio is heard.
Anyone can help me solving this?
Try getting some compressed air at Wal-Mart or Best Buy or another retailer and blow the headphone jack clean with that. A can will cost about $5 and you'll need to be 18 or older to buy it.
If it still doesn't work after that, the headphone jack will likely need to be replaced. Unless you do electronics repair, find a professional to replace it for you.
I have an iMac 27 Late 2012 and I upgraded my SSD.
The fusion drive is a misnomer - it's actually two drives. There is an PCIe SSD, probably about 128GB that attached to the logic board, then there's a 3.5" 1TB HDD. Technically, you could upgrade the PCIe blade SSD drive, but after some research, I found it wasn't really economical.
All you need is a standard SSD to replace that HDD. You then create a fusion drive using CoreStorage and you will end up with an SSD with 1.13 TB of total storage.

While you are doing all these upgrades, I would upgrade the memory as well. I used Crucial Memory and your iMac can get up to 32GB of RAM

I was able to get this to work using a 2013 iMac in Target Display Mode. The 2013 iMac was connected to a 2011 iMac by a Thunderbolt cable. I needed to make sure muting was not checked off and the volume was up high enough on both the 2011 and 2012 iMacs. I was able to access the System Preferences on the 2013 iMac by using Screen Sharing.
Below is a image of the 2013 iMac screen while the 2013 iMac is in Target Display Mode. The System Preferences window is shown for both the 2011 iMac and the 2013 iMac. The 2013 iMac System Preferences window is on the desktop of the 2013 iMac. The 2013 iMac desktop is being accessed through Screen Sharing.
