Now I have this iPad that's synced with my home iTunes. I need to add just one pdf onto it. So I installed iTunes here, but it won't sync iTunes to iPad. It wants to sync iPad to iTunes instead. Which is pointless, as the local library is empty. Both are logged on same iTunes account.
How do I make iTunes sync to iPad, so things can be added to the library and then synced back to iDevice?
In researching solutions, I found this discussion at apple.com in which somebody suggests "damaging" the iTunes library. This lead to a very useful post which discusses how iTunes uses the data it has to recreate what it doesn't have and gives instructions on how to damage (without deleting) the file -- spoiler: erase the data, leave the file.
Fortunately, I had backed up the iTunes files before I recreated the iTunes library.
I copied my backed up files back into the iTunes directory and launched iTunes and rebuilt what it needed to. There were no apps listed in the Apps display though.
When I connected my iPad, iTunes didn't complain about this being an unknown device. As it started to sync, it prompted my to transfer purchases (i.e. the apps on my iPad which didn't show in iTunes) -- but with no hint of having to erase anything. The sync took longer than normal, but everything is there and I can even find the songs which were originally hidden.
iPad is fine, will sync my wife's iPhone tonight.
How did you add the music to iTunes? Did you drag and drop it into the iTunes windows itself or did you manually add the music to the local folder?
If you manually added the music to the to the local folder then you need to "re-sync" your iTunes library so that the music appears in iTunes application.
Just choose "Add Folder to Library" and choose your iTunes music folder so that it "re-syncs" your library and ALSO adds all the new songs to your list as well.
You can add songs manually to your iTunes music folder without them appearing in iTunes if you navigate to the iTunes music folder itself on your computer and just drop the music in. iTunes tells you in the preferences:
But all of this is irrelevant until you tell us how you added the music to your computer???????

Your first sync will bring items from your iPad to your iTunes library. Once that is done via iBooks on your mac drop the PDF into that app. Then when you sync again that PDF will show up on your iPad.
Or you can just email (iMessage, AirDrop) the PDF to your iPad and then open it and save it into iBooks.
