In order to reserve a conference room in my office (via Exchange) I have to send a meeting request to the room's calendar. I have a recurring daily event to book a room indefinitely, and I don't want this recurring event showing up in my calendar because it's just clutter.
At the very least, I've turned off notifications. Is there any way to hide the event so it's not constantly visible in Calendar?
You cannot silence the alerts of a single calendar in iOS. Alerts utilize Notification Center, and the Calendar options in Notification Center apply to all calendars. I know this is not the answer you are hoping for.
The best option, as mentioned in the comments above, is to disable the calendar on your work account, when not desired, and re-enable it again when you need it. To do this, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Your Work Mail Account. Slide off Calendars. This isn't a good option, admittedly, as you will have to re-download your calendars every time it's slid back on.
Another option is to keep calendars turned off for this account, and use Exchange Outlook Web Access to access your calendars. This may be even a worse interface, however, as the OWA interface is not mobile-optimized.
My last suggestion is to use a third-party app to manage one of your calendars and the built-in Calendar app to manage the other. You can then disable Notifications on one of the two apps. You have to look potentially in two places for your calendar entries, but you will potentially get the granular control you need. Here are some calendar apps to examine: Calvetica, MiCal.
So, it looks like Outlook for Mac 2011 is incapable of proposing updates for meetings sent by other people (or, for meetings sent by Outlook for Windows users), regardless of standard permissions.
Looks like this is another missing feature alongside voting buttons and easy calendar sharing requests. In Outlook for Windows you can propose updates that the organiser can accept or reject; in Outlook for Mac there seems to be nothing like this.

It looks like the only possibility is to decline the meeting, then send your own - or, if that's not an option (which will be true any time it's not appropriate to just become the new meeting organiser), you need to email the organiser (e.g. in a 'Decline' comment) and ask them to do it for you.
A bit rubbish because, if they're a Windows user, they'll think you're a fool who can't find the 'Propose new time' button, and they'll think you're wasting their time asking them to do simple tasks for you...

The best way to do this is to create a new calendar within the Calendar app, label it what you'd like (perhaps "Hidden"?) and move any events you'd like to hide over to this calendar. When done, just uncheck the box next to the calendar and it disappears.
