How to find file system of external hard drive

I have plugged external hard drive. It does not show in Normal Mode. I can see its Type Name and Identifier thru terminal.

  1. I want to find the file system of the external hard drive.
  2. I want to format the disk.

The easiest way to format any disk is to use Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Just start the application, select the drive to be formatted in the left column, make double sure you've selected the right one and select the file system type, partition sizes etc. on the right hand side.
